Security alert: Android 6.0 or earlier will no longer receive security updates

Alert! Google’s own last year data suggests that about 40% of Android active users worldwide use a version of 6.0 or earlier, and according to the policy in the “Android Security Bulletin”, no releases for versions below 7.0 in 2019 (Nougat) Security Patch for Android. This means that more than 1 billion active phones and tablets worldwide will no longer receive security updates. It is reported that using any device below Android 8 poses a security risk.

It is reported that some netizens have tested several Android devices that have been purchased for many years, and most of them can only run Android 7.0. The results showed that security experts hired by consumer groups were able to infect all devices with malware, some of which were infected multiple times.

Google previously stated that they have been working to improve the security of Android devices. They provide security updates, bug fixes, and other protections every month.

How to check whether your phone is vulnerable and what to do?

  1. If your Android device is more than two years old, check whether it can be updated to a newer version of the operating system. If you are on an earlier version than Android 7.0 Nougat, try to update via Settings> System>Advanced System update
  2. If you can’t update, your phone could be at risk of being hacked, especially if you are running a version of Android 4 or lower. If this is the case be careful about downloading apps outside the Google Play store
  3. Also, be wary of suspicious SMS or MMS messages
  4. Back up data in at least two places (a hard drive and a cloud service)
  5. Install a mobile anti-virus via an app, but bear in mind that the choice is limited for older phones
