MediaTek’s newest Dimensity processors are equivalent to Snapdragon 888? All you need to know

MediaTek has just introduced two new Dimensity chipsets, one of which has an unusual goal. Joining the company’s flagship push with the Dimensity 9000, MediaTek is introducing the new 8100 and 8000 processors, which will compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 and 870.

Those are last year’s components, but with the development of gaming phones and sub-flagships using older chipsets, it might be a wise decision.

Here are the specs of the newest chipsets below.

On the CPU side, there are four A78 cores (clocked differently in the two variants) and four smaller A55 cores, paired with 4MB L3 cache, produced at a 5NM TSMC node (N4), and partnered with a Mali G-610 6-core GPU.

It also includes some new features, such as Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E support, and the modem with which it is connected supports the newest 3GPP specifications for sub-6GHz 5G (no mmWave) and up to 200Mhz 2CC aggregation. In a nutshell, it’s hardly cutting-edge, but it does have certain modern advantages.

MediaTek believes that performance should be in the same ballpark as last year’s Snapdragon 888, with certain workloads and efficiency actually favoring MediaTek, however, we’ll have to wait and see whether these claims are true.

Of course, MediaTek cannot predict how its clients, the smartphone manufacturers, will use these chipsets in their devices. However, the firm drew several analogies to the Snapdragon 888 during our briefing, and when a source asked what its aim was, it specifically mentioned the Snapdragon 888 and 870.
