Why Google Messages is asking for SMS donations from users? Is it safe?

Google Messages began testing categories in India more than a year ago, and the feature was recently expanded to other locations. As a one-stop destination for regular messaging, OTP pins, and promotional messages, the app rapidly grew congested, demanding classification.

The feature employs AI algorithms to determine whether communication belongs to which category – a process that needs extensive training with enormous quantities of data to improve accuracy. Google has lately begun requesting message “donations” from users in order to speed up this procedure.

Google requests users for SMS donations to improve their categorization

If you are requested to participate, you will now see a new prompt at the top of your screen to make message contributions to Google in order to enhance the app’s sorting process. However, participation is not compulsory, which means one can always opt-out of donating SMS if they want to.

How safe is Google Messages’ SMS donations?

Those who are brave enough to accept it will be routed to a website where they may choose messages to submit to Google. The software concentrates on promotional and business-related text messages, which are all delivered by default. You may remove a particular item from your list if it includes sensitive information.

Google is also masking phone numbers and websites before they are submitted to guarantee that any information associated with you does not reach places you do not want it to.

Fortunately, there is a workable and safe option if you truly want to contribute to Google’s data-gathering efforts without jeopardizing your own.

You may manually filter your own communications by removing portions of each piece of content before sending them in. When everything seems to be in order, just press the confirm button to know that your contribution is yet another step toward better organization in the Messages app.

The new prompt is only visible to certain users, so you may not see it the next time you visit Google Messages. Remember, this is a fully voluntary request, and you are not obligated to provide any data.
