Facebook has decided to address the lawsuit over Android user privacy

Developer Dylan McKay observed in 2018 that Facebook was doing something unusual with information from his Android phone – it was logging the names, numbers, and length of each conversation.

Shortly after he made this public on Twitter, a group of Android smartphone owners grouped together and launched a lawsuit against the social media behemoth, citing a breach of privacy. It’s taken almost four years, but Facebook seems to be ready to resolve the allegations.

Facebook finally trying to resolve the Android user privacy lawsuit against it

According to court documents from the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, the precise provisions of the claim have not been fully resolved, and it is pending final clearance from Judge Richard Seeborg.

But it’s worth noting that Facebook — as Meta — has finally agreed to any form of payment at all. According to Digital News Daily, the firm first shifted accountability back to consumers, posting a “fact check” in March 2018 that said call and text monitoring was always “opt-in only.”

The claimants in the lawsuit claimed that when Messenger was installed, it only requested access to contacts and did not request authorization to capture further data. Facebook said that the request could be found on another screen and that Android users were not damaged in any way.

The court in the case ultimately sided with the consumers, agreeing that the silent data-scraping depleted device storage and battery capacity.

According to the Digital News Daily article, the Android users and Facebook will negotiate details of the lawsuit before returning to court in April to have the arrangement approved by the judge.
