Chrome OS 99 update brings in a new virtual desk feature, GIF maker and more features

Version 99 of the Chrome operating system has now been released. This release is rather minor as Google plans for the major release of Chrome browser and Chrome OS version 100.

But there are several important updates and features that one must not ignore. Here’s a list of what’s new in Chrome OS 99 after the update.

Full list of new features after the latest Chrome OS 99 update

1) GIF Maker

The Chrome OS Camera App has received an update that includes a feature for creating short, 5-second GIFs that can be instantaneously shared directly from the app.

To make a GIF, just switch the camera to video mode and look for a new GIF button. You can record the moving image for a full five seconds or end it earlier if you choose. When you’re completed, you’ll be able to save, retake, or share it. The last of the three options will open the Share Sheet directly within the Camera App.

2) Nearby sharing by Background scanning

Google is adding background scanning to the file-sharing feature in Chrome OS 99. Instead of having to manually enable Nearby Share, users will now receive a notification when another device is utilizing it. Then, just click the message to authorize the file transfer or dismiss it if the file isn’t arriving at your location.

To enable it, go to chrome:/flags, look for “nearby sharing background scanning,” and set it to enabled.

3) New Drag and drop feature for Virtual Desk

The premise of this idea is simple but effective. While working from several Virtual Desks, you can now add an active window or app to a new desk by enabling overview mode and dragging the app into the “new desk” tab. This functionality is now enabled by default.

Other than the addition of these new features, the devs have also worked on fixing some bugs and improving the user experience.
