Google has broken the traditional release schedule for major Android versions in recent months, with the release of Android 12L earlier this month, as well as the availability of the first Developer Previews for Android 13.
Google is now spinning the users for another loop as the company is beginning to beta test Pixel Feature Drops for June.
Android 12 beta continues with updates for June Feature Drop starting with Beta 1
Google wrote in a Reddit post on Wednesday,
“The Android 12 beta continues with the next round of updates for our June feature drop starting with Beta 1. These are known as Quarterly Platform Releases (QPRs) and delivered to Google Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops. Beta 1 (S3B1.220218.004) includes improvements to functionality and user experience as well as the latest bug fixes, optimizations, and the March 2022 security patches.”
Google said that everybody who is presently using the Android 12L beta on Pixel smartphones will be immediately upgraded to QPR Beta 1, rather than being transferred to the stable release channel, as is typical when a new Android version is released.
In other words, Google appears to be keeping three release channels for Pixels for the time being: the usual stable OS (now Android 12L/12.1), QPR betas (currently testing the June Feature Drop), and Developer Previews (now Android 13). This closely corresponds to Chrome’s release channels.

QPR Beta 1 is now available for the Pixel 4, 4a, 5, 5a, 6, and 6 Pro. Because the Pixel 3a and 3a XL are almost three years old, Google is discontinuing software upgrades, meaning those phones will be updated to the stable March update rather than QPR Beta 1.
