Google is rebranding Chrome OS by dropping the space between ‘Chrome’ and ‘OS’; aims to unify the brand

According to 9to5Google, Google has chosen to unify the branding and remove the gap between “Chrome” and “OS,” reducing it to a single word and thus rebranding Chrome. Likewise, Chromium OS, the open-source version of Chrome OS mostly used by developers, will be renamed “ChromiumOS.”

The change is documented via a commit in Chromium Gerrit that states the following:

Update Chrome OS to ChromeOS (string update). Branding changes to unify and update Chrome OS to ChromeOS (removing the space). This CL also includes changing Chromium OS to ChromiumOS as well.

– Chromium Gerrit

‘ChromeOS’ rebranding is expected to roll out in May 2022

Although the aim for this rebranding is clear, there are other speculations and assumptions in the community as well revolving around this new rebranding.

Google intends to avoid any additional variations in how “ChromeOS” is written in the future and make this new branding the norm. This includes any references to the operating system in the code itself. At the very least, this might offer some much-needed uniformity, but it remains to be seen how long it will take for Google’s various documents and official websites to properly transition to the new name.
