OnePlus is Working on New Operating System

OnePlus abandons its plans to merge OxygenOS with ColorOS. For a few months, the news was sounding that would end the differentiation of OnePlus mobiles: its software. The Chinese company will continue with OxygenOS as a ROM, although they will share a good part of the ColorOS code, as they currently do.

In this way, OnePlus mobiles will continue to be the ones with the cleanest ROM, while the OPPO ROM will be more focused on offering additional functions and working more on the visual aspect in a personalized way.

OnePlus Unified OS

However, OnePlus announced that it has given up on making a unified operating system derived from OxygenOS and ColorOS based on Android 13 and that it is focusing its efforts only on OxygenOS.

In recent months, OnePlus has faced a lot of criticism from its customers because of its OxygenOS operating system. The manufacturer then merged its code base with ColorOS, from the also Oppo. The move came to try to provide faster updates to the OS. However, with this commercial alliance, OnePlus also lost one of its differentiators, which was clean and well-optimized software for its hardware.

The ColorOS and OxygenOS code is becoming more and more similar, and for a few months, the news has been sounding: a ROM merged between the two, a hybrid with the functions of ColorOS, but with the simplicity of OxygenOS. The plan did not make much sense, since OPPO and OnePlus are not independent firms, the differential factor between the two companies remains in the software.

The plan has changed, although there will still be convergence between ROMs. Much of the code will be unified so that both ROMs are fluid and share many of the functions. However, there will still be a clear difference between them.

OxygenOS will continue to be the closest ROM to Android Stock, as it has been since its inception. By sharing code with ColorOS it is gradually becoming denser, but it is still OnePlus’ differential ROM.

In its statement, OnePlus stated that OxygeOS and Color OS will continue to be developed on the same codebase, to allow for faster updates and better build quality of the software.

However, the company noted that both systems will continue to be owned by independent brands. OnePlus also cited feedback from its community, which wants the separation to remain.
