Instagram is allegedly working on a new feature where users can reply to stories with voice messages

Instagram emerged as a social media behemoth by making it simple for individuals to post photos and videos. However, it appears that even this visually-oriented network is susceptible to the allure of social audio technologies such as Twitter Spaces, Facebook Live Audio Rooms, and Clubhouse.

You can currently send voice messages through Instagram DMs, but an intriguing finding made by Alessandro Paluzzi — a developer who reverse engineers programs to detect impending new features — suggests that more Instagram audio may be on the way.

Instagram audio story reply feature might go live soon

Saturday, Paluzzi tweeted an Instagram Stories screenshot with a microphone symbol in the area for story replies, stating clearly that Instagram “is working on the ability to reply to Stories with voice messages.” This follows after he mentioned a few months ago that the Meta-owned site was building on an edit grid option.

Of course, there are still a lot of unknowns at this stage – developers may occasionally plan for prospective features that will never be deployed. It’s also possible that comparing this feature (if it is provided) to social audio services like Spaces or Clubhouse is misleading. It appears to be more Snapchat-like, as you may respond to stories on that app with voice chatting.

Even if the audio Story reply arrives and is a rip-off of Snapchat, it might be a major success with users, bringing a new, possibly more personalized component to the way Instagram Stories works. There is currently no information available beyond what Paluzzi has uncovered, therefore it is anyone’s guess when Instagram will integrate this feature.
