Google is inevitably finalizing the transition to the Material You style. After the fonts and icons, the Mountain View giant has announced new symbols, which take advantage of variable font technology.
The new symbols, available under the Apache 2.0 license and offered in three styles (outlined, rounded, and sharp), can be adjusted for fill, weight, slope, and optical size.
Material Symbols are our newest icons consolidating over 2,500 glyphs in a single font file with a wide range of design variants. Symbols are available in three styles and four adjustable variable font styles (fill, weight, grade, and optical size).
Google divides them into various categories: business, Android, audio and video, brand, business and payments, common stock, communication, hardware, home, family, maps, other, photos and images, privacy and security, property, social, formatting of the text Actions, Transportation, Travel and UI.
The new symbols can be used by web , Android (Vector Drawable format) and iOS (Apple Symbols) developers, while support for Flutter is expected to arrive in the future.
As for the various customization possibilities , they can be adjusted
- fill , for the default icon style
- the weight, which defines the thickness of the symbol’s stroke, with a range of weights between thin (100) and bold (700)
- quality, for greater detail than weight adjustments
- The dimensions , ranging from 20 dp to 48 dp
