IOT Apps Coming To Android Auto And Automotive

Google is rolling out a new Android Auto and Automotive update that brings more smart home/Internet of Things (IoT) apps. To recall, in January 2021, Samsung launched its SmartThings app for Android Auto, which allows users to turn on/off and control SmartThings-compatible smart home products from their car’s screen.

With this new update, the US tech giant will provide a seamless in-car experience, with the company now enabling developers to bring their Internet of Things (IoT) apps into cars. After updating, users to easily manage IoT systems like home security and doorbells directly from their cars. 

As we know, Android Auto currently supports three app categories: media, messaging, and navigation. With a new update to the car app library, Android Auto and Android Automotive OS will now support another category, Internet of Things (IoT) apps.

Android Auto categories include:

  • Media: YouTube Music and Spotify 
  • Messaging: Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp
  • Navigation: Google Maps and Waze

Notably, the update is currently being rolled out to developers, and a stable rollout will happen soon in the coming weeks or months. In addition, car owners using Android Auto can download IoT apps from Google Play.
