MediaTek Could Beat Snapdragon in upcoming flagship smartphone SoC: Rumoured To Collaboration Nvidia

In November 2021, MediaTek and AMD announced a partnership to co-engineer industry-leading Wi-Fi solutions with AMD RZ600 Series Wi-Fi 6E modules featuring the new MediaTek Filogic 330P chip. Now, the rumor is that MediaTek will be collaborating with Nvidia AI GPUs for the upcoming flagship smartphone SoC, which is expected to launch in early 2024.

After the partnership between MediaTek and Nvidia, MediaTek may take on Snapdragon in the upcoming flagship smartphone SoC because Nvidia is the world leader in AI GPU artificial intelligence computing, designing graphics processing units (GPUs), application programming interfaces (APIs) as well as systems on chip units (SoCs) for data science and high-performance computing.

MediaTek’s AI implementation in the flagship Dimensity 9200 lags behind Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. If, after the collaboration, MediaTek gains a slight performance edge over Qualcomm’s flagship solutions, more smartphone companies will find it more attractive to use Dimensity SoCs, which will help MediaTek conquer the flagship segment.

On the other hand and Samsung promised similar things with the Exynos 2200 SoC that integrates an RDNA 2 GPU. Still, performance needs to be higher than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or Apple’s Bionic implementation. If this collaboration is successful here, it will be an excellent opportunity to prove that established desktop GPU architectures can also be adapted for smartphone SoCs.

In the future, it remains to be seen whether Nvidia can take an architecture as complex as the Ada Lovelace and make it small enough to provide any meaningful performance advantage over competing solutions for (MediaTek) smartphone SoCs.
