Android 14 User Experience Feature Focus: Grant Partial Access To Photos And Videos

The first developer preview of Android 14 was launched last month, and it laid all the groundwork for the next iteration of the world’s most extensive operating system. The first developer preview brings some customization options and better battery life, and the second developer preview doubles down on some of those changes. Android 14 also introduces new ways to protect your security and privacy, such as providing partial access to photos and videos.

Android 14: Grant Partial Access To Photos And Videos

With Android 14, a user can grant partial access to their visual media library (photos and videos) when an app requests any of the visual media permissions introduced in Android 13 (API level 33): READ_MEDIA_IMAGES and READ_MEDIA_VIDEO. Moreover, Android 14 comes with three dialog boxes for accessing visual media permissions, which include, Select photos and videos, Always allow all, and Don’t allow.

Android 14: New Visual Media Permissions Dialog Contains:

  • Select photos and videos: Users interacting with your app on Android 14 devices can select the specific photos and videos they want to be available on your app.
  • Always allow all: Gives the user visual media library access to all photos and videos on the device.
  • Don’t allow: Denies all visual media library (Photos/Videos) access to the user.

Worth noting if the user chooses “Selects photos and videos” and your app later requests READ_MEDIA_IMAGES or READ_MEDIA_VIDEO again, the system displays a different dialog, giving the user access to additional photos and videos.
