Android 14 Beta 1 Is Now Available With Smarter System UI And Stability Improvements

Last night, after two developer previews, Google released the first beta of Android 14, which brings improvements across its core themes of privacy, security, performance, developer productivity, and user customization to improve the experience for tablets, foldable, and other devices.

The Android 14 beta is now available for users as well as developers. It gives you early access to test new features for our next unreleased platform, which is still in active development. This means you can now easily test upcoming software, even if you’re not a developer, simply by enrolling your compatible Pixel device on the Android Beta website.

Once you do that, Android 14 Beta 1 will arrive as an OTA update. Note that if you’re already enrolled in the Android 13 QPR beta program and Android 14 DP with a device that’s also supported on Android 14, you’ll automatically get the update to Android 14 Beta 1 without any action. Also note this is a beta, and thus bugs and issues are inevitable.

According to Google‘s release timeline, this beta will be followed by another beta in May. Then, starting in June, there will be two “platform stability” releases, and we can expect to see a stable Android 14 OS smartphone by August this year.

Android 14 Beta 1 Features:

In terms of what’s new, Google is highlighting a Smarter system UI, more graphics capabilities, personalization, improved privacy, and app compatibility in Beta 1. In Android 14, the gesture navigation includes a prominent back arrow when interacting with apps to improve back gesture understanding and usability, Google says. This arrow also complements your wallpaper or device theme with the Material You support.

In addition, this beta update brings an improved System Share Sheet, where you can now add custom actions to the System Sharesheet that they invoke in any application. Hopefully, this means that the system now uses more app signals to determine the ranking of Direct Share targets.

Android 14 also enhances the per-app language preferences introduced in Android 13, allowing dynamic customization of the set of languages displayed in the Android Settings per-app language list.
