The foldable market has been continuously growing, with new brands investing in bringing their foldable phones to the market to provide competition to other brands. Over the years, foldable phones are constantly improving, and the newly launched OnePlus Open is no exception. If so, then it can be clearly said that Samsung has finally got serious competition in the foldable phone market. Still, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has already proven that the phone is quite capable. So, here’s a comparison of two of the best foldable phones, and which phone is suitable for getting the title of best foldable device.

OnePlus Open Vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Same Hardware With Different Design

When we see both the phones at first glance, both the phones look exactly similar, but they differ from each other in one or the other way.

The OnePlus Open differs from itself, depending on the colour variant you choose. It comes in two most elegant colors, Voyager Black as well as Emerald Dusk. The Voyager Black colour model comes with a vegan leather back panel finish, while the other Emerald Dusk colour has a matte frosted glass finish. Whereas the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is similar across its configuration.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a very well-built and sturdy device. It’s 0.53 inches thick when closed, which provides a heavy in-hand feel. In comparison, the OnePlus Open is 0.46 inches thick when it’s closed, which gives a lighter and nice in-hand feel.

In addition, OnePlus has sported a Flexion hinge, which is considered to use a few parts as compared to other hinges. While talking about the built quality, both these devices are perfectly similar.

Display

The OnePlus Open’s display is comparatively bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. The Open has a screen refresh rate that can reach from 1Hz-120Hz with a 2,800 nits brightness at its peak. The Fold 5 sports a 1750 nits peak brightness and also comes with an adaptive refresh rate that can easily reach to 120Hz. Although both the phones use an AMOLED display on both the main and the cover screens. Still, the OnePlus Open comes with a more impressive display.

Software & Performance

The next-gen processor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, has already proved that it’s more powerful and energy-efficient. Both the Open and Fold 5 use the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which might sound the same, but the chipset used in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has been optimized to run especially on Galaxy devices. However, it can be an overclocked version of the chipset used in the OnePlus Open

On the flip side, both the foldable smartphone runs on Android 13 along with their type of UI on the top. Samsung uses One UI, while OnePlus has OxygenOS. OxygenOS is quite capable of performing better, and overall specs are nice as compared to other devices, while Samsung’s One UI can adapt to every Samsung foldable phone.

Moreover, both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the OnePlus Open sports a very close battery capacity. Galaxy Fold 5 comes with 4,400mAh battery power, which can last around 13 hours, providing an average performance, while the OnePlus Open has 4,805mAh battery power, which clearly beats the battery capacity of Fold 5. Almost edging closer to 5000mAh, it might provide better performance as compared to Galaxy Z Fold 5

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a triple camera setup with a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 10MP telephoto lens, offering stunning pictures with more vibrant details. However, the company has kept the old camera setup, which was used in the previous foldable phones. As a result, Samsung hasn’t done any refinement within the camera setup of its current foldable smartphone.

In contrast, OnePlus has taken time and gradually bought its latest foldable with a refreshed camera setup. It consists of a 48MP main camera, a 64MP telephoto lens along with 3x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide lens.

Conclusion

Although the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the OnePlus Open are nearly close, it’s clear that Samsung has some things better, whereas some features are much better in the OnePlus Open. In contrast, it all depends on your requirements and the features you want in your foldable. For example, in case you are thinking of buying a foldable device for better battery support, then you must go for the OnePlus Open foldable smartphone.
