Samsung has been caught in a controversy over its Game Optimization Service, which silently throttles the performance of about 10,000 applications. Geekbench pulled all benchmark results for all recent flagship Galaxy devices in response to the revelation, and Samsung promised to deliver an update with a toggle for the feature.
Xiaomi has also employed different performance adjustments over the years, and Geekbench reports that the business is now using the same per-app throttling as Samsung.

According to John Poole, the founder of Primate Labs (the makers of Geekbench), Xiaomi is employing the same type of per-app performance modifications as Samsung’s Game Optimization Service. Poole tested the optimization service on a Xiaomi Mi 11 using a modified build of Geekbench that substituted the standard app identification with the Fortnite identity.

As a result, single-core performance was reduced by 30% and multi-core performance was reduced by 15% compared to the standard Geekbench program. In other words, when Geekbench is detected, Xiaomi’s software either enhances performance or purposefully slows down Fortnite (or both).
Geekbench camouflaged as Netflix and Chrome performed worse than Geekbench disguised as the mobile game Genshin Impact, according to Android Police’s analysis of the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12X. Geekbench with a Chrome identifier, for example, earned a single-core score of 737 and a multi-core score of 3071, but Geekbench disguising as Genshin Impact received a single-core score of 1119 and a multi-core score of 3468.

It’s unclear if the throttling is only dependent on the package name of a certain program or game, or if the phone monitors performance over time and seeks to adjust throttling via other means. Geekbench confirmed to Android Police that it will begin removing Xiaomi phones from its Android Benchmark chart “later this week.”
