Nothing Phone (1): A Design That Will ‘Bring The Inside Out’

On March 23rd, Nothing accepted that it was working on a phone which will be launched sometime this year. Founded by former OnePlus head Carl Pei, a London-based start-up has released the Nothing Ear(1) earbuds.

The CEO Carl Pei and design head Tom Howard talked about what consumers might look for in the Nothing phone (1). The company might follow Ear(1) ‘s example and approach an artistic and translucent body that reveals the device’s inner workings.

“When you look inside almost any Android phone, they’re almost all the same,” Howard notes, “Of course, the industry is optimizing everything they do, year on year, trying to squeeze the most performance out of the smallest space. From a design perspective, we wanted to bring the inside out, which meant working with the engineers to start from first principles,” Howard continues. “There are over 400 components in a smartphone, assembled in layers. We wanted to celebrate the “good ones”, the things we thought were really interesting to emphasize.” (via. wallpaper.com)

So will the Nothing Phone (1) redraw our mental insight of what a phone is and how it works? For Nothing, the unifying power of design is a crucial part of its brand. In theory, this could mean a similar look to the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, with a translucent back for a stylish enthusiast look. The visible circuit board is fake, but it looked real, and Nothing could imitate the design.

Like many other Android devices in the market, the image shows that the Phone (1) will also include a Type-C port for charging. With Carl Pei previously being associated with OnePlus, it may be possible that Nothing could also support fast charging under a different name.

Other features from the leaked image indicate a single punch-hole selfie camera on a nearly bezel-less display. Since these are only concept images of the Phone (1), we will need to wait for more information until the final launch of the device.
