Google’s January 2023 Security Update Rolling Out, Includes Support For Static Spatial Audio

Due to New Year’s Day, Google may not have published its monthly security patch as usual on the first Monday of the month, but the company is soon back on the updated track. Today, the search tech giant has started rolling out the January 2023 Android security patch for the latest Pixel phones, including the Google Pixel 7 Pro and its smaller brother. 

According to the information, the monthly software update of January 2023 is available for all eligible Pixel devices running on the Android 13 operating system, and will get the latest security patch starting today. Depending on the carrier and device, the update will roll out in phases over the next few weeks. 

Additionally, the update is coming via OTA and will appear in your notification panel soon. On the other hand, the company also confirmed that it would roll out Pixel Buds Pro in the coming weeks, that will enable spatial audio with head tracking.

Google January 2023 update What’s New:

The Google January 2023 update for Pixel devices brings functional improvements as well as fixes to system-related issues such as Audio, Biometrics, Bluetooth, Camera, Framework, Battery, Display, Graphics, and more.

Moreover, the update also adds support for static spatial audio for Pixel devices, which will provide surround sound for any connected headset. For more information, do check the full changelog.

Audio

  • Add support for Spatial Audio with certain devices and accessories *[1]

Biometrics

  • Additional improvements for fingerprint recognition and response in certain conditions *[2]

Bluetooth

  • Fix for issue occasionally preventing certain Bluetooth Low Energy devices or accessories from pairing or reconnecting
  • Fix for issue preventing audio from playing over certain headphones or accessories while connected in certain conditions

Camera

  • Fix for issue occasionally causing captured photos to appear corrupted or distorted while zoomed in *[3]

Display & Graphics

  • Fix for issue occasionally preventing the display from waking or appearing turned off while device is powered on *[3]

User Interface

  • Fix for issue occasionally causing UI to display in landscape layout while device is held in portrait mode
