How To Put An iPhone In DFU Mode & DFU Restore An iPhone?

DFU or Device Firmware Update allows users to restore their iPhones deeply. You can put your iPhone in the DFU mode when your iPhone is not turning off completely, and the Apple logo freezes on the iPhone screen. You can put your iPhone in DFU mode at any time. Here in this article, we are going to explain how you can put your iPhone in DFU mode. Generally, putting your iPhone in DFU mode is the last step in determining whether it’s a software or a hardware problem causing issues you are having with your iPhone.  

Points to note before putting the iPhone in the DFU mode:

  • Create a backup of your device on your iCloud or computer.
  • The DFU restore process updates your device to its latest iOS version.
  • If your iPhone is damaged by water. Don’t ever try to DFU restore your device, as it can severely harm your device.
  • Before you begin, plug your iPhone into your computer.

How to put an iPhone in the DFU Restore mode?

Although the process of putting the iPhone in the DFU mode is similar in every model of iPhone, no matter which device you own, you can follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Quickly press and release the Volume up button.
  • Now, quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Side button until the screen turns black.
  • As soon as the screen turns black, hold the side button and Press and Hold the Volume down button for about 5 seconds.
  • After 5 seconds, let go of the Side button and keep holding the Volume Down button until your iPhone appears on your computer.
  • Once it appears on your computer, let go of the Side button, put your iPhone down, and don’t unplug it.
  • Remember, if there’s anything on your iPhone screen, you are not in the DFU mode. And if your screen is black, it indicates you are in DFU mode.
  • Now your computer will show a pop-up notification which says, “Your Mac has detected an iPhone in recovery mode; you must restore this iPhone before it can be used”. 
  • Tap on OK.
  • Now, click on the Restore iPhone option.
