Samsung has finally revealed that the brand has been demoting several Galaxy devices from monthly to quarterly updates. The company has significantly removed and downgraded several devices from the list, making them no longer eligible to receive the monthly security patches. Additionally, the SMR update has significantly removed a few Galaxy models from eligibility.
With the latest decision, Samsung has significantly shifted several of its Galaxy models from the monthly update schedule to the quarterly updates, including the Samsung Galaxy S20 series: the Galaxy S20, S20 5G, S20+, S20+ 5G, S20 Ultra, along with the Galaxy S20 FE and S20 FE 5G, respectively. In addition to the S20 lineup, the Galaxy Note 20 series and the A52 5G (non-enterprise edition) have also been demoted from monthly to quarterly updates. This means that the aforementioned Galaxy models will not receive their security patches every month; rather, they will now get their security patches once every three months (quarterly).
Meanwhile, Samsung launched both the Galaxy S20 series and the Note 20 models with Android 10 in 2020, so people should be very aware that these models have already been upgraded to Android 13, which was their third and final software update, as they were only eligible to receive 3 generations of software updates as per Samsung’s previous software update policy. But now, things have been changing as the brand has upgraded its software update policy with the arrival of the Galaxy S21 lineup.
However, it’s already been confirmed by the brand that the Galaxy S20 series and the Note 20 models are ineligible to be upgraded to the latest Android 14-based One UI 6.0 or 6.1, respectively. While these phones have already received their March 2024 security patches, unfortunately, they will not get the next April 2024 security patches, as they will not come. Moreover, it’s expected that these models will get another security patch in the month of June.
Removed from SMR:
On the flip side, Samsung has also confirmed that the brand has been finally removing a few Galaxy phones, including the Galaxy Z Flip LTE version, the Galaxy M21, and the Tab A 8.4 (2020), respectively, from getting any further software update support. This certainly means that the aforementioned Galaxy devices will no longer receive their software updates.
However, Samsung has removed the Galaxy Z Flip LTE version from getting software support, but thankfully, the brand’s later clamshell foldable Z Flip 5G will remain receiving its quarterly security patches for the eligible time period.
