At the beginning of this year, it was announced that Gmail’s Basic HTML view for desktop web and mobile web will be phased out in early 2024. We hope this will help screen reader users move from the HTML view to the Standard view so as to better serve our users, including members of the accessibility community.

Improved Usability In Standard View:

Especially for navigating the interface with a keyboard or screen reader, Gmail Standard view has undergone considerable usability improvements. Over the last few years, Standard View has become more and more accessible, and we continually make improvements so that all users have an excellent experience.

Getting Started:

Admins:

There is no admin control for this feature. Admins can continue using Gmail in Basic HTML view through February 2024. After this date, Gmail will automatically switch to Standard view.

For Final Users:

Users will automatically switch to the Standard Gmail view, which gives them access to the most recent Gmail security features when the Basic HTML view is deactivated. It is recommended that users who are still using outdated browsers upgrade them in order to guarantee Standard view compatibility. You can have a better experience on mobile devices by downloading the official Gmail app.

Timeline for Rollout:

Gmail will automatically transition to the Standard view on February 20, 2024. Before the automated rollout date, users can choose to go to the Standard view if they would rather make the shift manually.

Available:

This change affects both individuals with personal Google Accounts and users using Google Workspace accounts. The purpose of the update is to provide these user categories with a consistent and enhanced Gmail experience.
