Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod set: Release date and more revealed

Cyberpunk 2077 is receiving a VR compatibility mod later this week, courtesy of VR modder Luke Ross.

Originally intended for release in January, the update, known as Cyberpunk 2077 R.E.A.L VR, adds functionality for VR head-tracking to CD Projekt’s open-world RPG. It doesn’t provide VR controller functionality, though, instead of depending on more conventional control approaches.

Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod release date and gameplay revealed

It is believed that the new VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077 should release by 27 February 2022. However, no further confirmation or update has been revealed yet.

You can watch the mod in action through the video below, which shows off five minutes of VR-enhanced Cyberpunk play. In the video, Ross explores the environs, shows map and menu navigation, drives around Night City in both first-and-third person, and of course, gets into a big ol’ shootout.

In a Patreon post accompanying the video, Ross talks out several critical issues relating to the footage. He comments that performance is “very impressive for such a complicated and contemporary game.” indicating he obtained approximately 60fps when filming at 2700×2700 resolution, and 80-90fps in ordinary play. Then then, Ross’ setup is very hefty, filming the video on a Core i9-9900k and RTX 3090.

Interestingly, Ross also believes the game looks best in VR on low resolution. “The clarity and depth of detail you can produce in this technique are just remarkable.” Conversely, cranking up the settings to higher provides “really makes for a hazier vision in VR.”

He notably emphasizes the quality of Cyberpunk’s panoramas, noting “The vistas are truly breathtaking”, which is noteworthy because VR is normally at its poorest when displayed at distance.

The following bullet points largely involve Ross verifying that different functionality operates in VR, such as driving, picture mode, and braindance sequences. One significant section describes movement controls, with Ross adding that “You will be able to turn either using your gamepad stick (smooth turning) or just by gazing in the direction you wish to travel“. Aiming with guns, meanwhile “follows your look, with the sights “exactly aligned with your dominant eye.”

Ross didn’t specify a definite release date, but claimed to PC Gamer via email that the update “should be released by the end of this week.”

It’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t the first VR mod Ross has produced, with his prior efforts including adding VR compatibility to Mafia Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption 2.
