Samsung’s LPCAMM Memory Module Paves the Way for Faster, More Efficient PCs and Laptops

Samsung Electronics is one of the most powerful brands in the industry, and behind this is its hard work. The brand has tried its best to make every difficult technology a reality to maintain its legacy and has almost succeeded. Now again, it is planning something more convenient. Samsung has announced that it has developed the very first Low Power Compression Attached Memory Module (LPCAMM) form factor in the industry.

The latest innovation of the Korean brand ‘Samsung‘ is the Low Power Compression Attached Memory Module form factor, which is expected to transform the DRAM market for personal computers and laptops, additionally potentially even data centers. Also, it has also come to know that this new development of the company for its 7.5 Gbps (gigabits-per-second) LPCAMM has completed system verification through Intel’s platform.

Generally, computers and laptops have habitually used LPDDR DRAM or DDR-based So-DIMMs. Whereas LPDDR is compact, it’s permanently attached to the motherboard, making it challenging to move while repairs or upgrades. Jumping on the So-DIMMs, it can be attached or detached easily but, unfortunately, has limitations with performance and many other physical features.

LPCAMM is fixing the drawbacks of both LPDDR and So-DIMMs and addressing the significant demand for more efficient yet compact devices. Noticeably, the brand is offering a detachable module, LPCAMM, which surely enhances flexibility for PC and laptop manufacturers during the production procedure.

As compared to So-DIMM and LPCAMM, it occupies up to 60% less space on the motherboard. This offers enough efficient use for the internal space of the device, plus also improving performance by up to 50% and power efficiency by up to 70%. However, using LPDDR probably creates operational inconvenience, for instance, needing to replace the entire motherboard while upgrading a server’s DRAM specifications.

Regarding this new innovation, the Vice President of Memory at Intel stated: “We’re excited to be a part of the new standard enabling the client PC ecosystem and pave the path for future adoption and innovation in broader market segments.”

On the other hand, the Executive Vice President of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, Yongcheol Bae, also gave a statement; “With the growing demand in innovative memory solutions encompassing high performance, low power consumption, and manufacturing flexibility across various fields, LPCAMM is expected to gain wide adoption in PCs, laptops and data centers.”

Also, the brand assures to actively pursue opportunities to lengthen the LPCAMM solution market and collaborate closely with the industry to stretch new apps for its use. It is also revealed that LPCAMM is ready to be tested using upcoming-generation systems with various customers this year, and commercialization is planned for 2024.
