HIGHLIGHTS
  • Google and WhatsApp made an announcement that the WhatsApp Backups will now be counted towards Google Account Storage.
  • The change will begin to roll out to several WhatsApp beta users from next month.
  • It will gradually be rolled out to all WhatsApp users on Android in the first half of 2024.

Google, as well as WhatsApp, recently made an interesting announcement regarding a small change on Android devices, including that all the WhatsApp chat and media backups will now be counted towards your Google Account cloud storage beginning from December 2023.

Google notes that this includes a total of 15GB of free cloud storage, which is included with each Google Account, more than the storage provided by most mobile platforms in one shot on iOS and iCloud. Nevertheless, Google also states that on every Android device, WhatsApp backup experience will remain consistent, along with how it performs on several other platforms.

This newly announced change will begin to roll out next month to several WhatsApp beta users and will gradually be rolled out to all WhatsApp users on Android in the first half of 2024. Users can see a banner within WhatsApp Settings >> Chats >> then Chat Backup that says. “30 days before this change takes place”.

Google states that in case your storage limits have been reached, you can easily free up space by deleting photos and other big files using several storage management tools offered by Google. Additionally, users can also delete media files from WhatsApp, which helps in reducing the space used by their next WhatsApp backup.

According to Google, “If you hit your storage limit, you’ll need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you do not need. We’ll continue working with WhatsApp to provide reliable and secure backup support. Please stay tuned for more updates”.

Alternatively, users can also use the Google One subscription in order to get more storage, whose subscription price begins from $1.99 per month for 100GB of storage.

Google further claims, “To help you with the transition, we will soon provide eligible users limited, one-time Google One promotions”.
