The Oscars featured the ad for Google’s astounding ‘Look to Speak’ app

Google released an incredible Android software two years ago that enables people who may feel alienated from the world due to paralysis or incapacitating disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to communicate in a pretty normal manner.

Google’s emotional ‘Look to Speak’ ad at the Oscars took the spotlight

Look to Speak is an app that uses a phone’s front-facing camera to track a user’s eyes as they travel from left to right, selecting from a list of words and phrases that the phone then reads out using text-to-speech. During the 2022 Academy Awards on Sunday night, Google aired an emotional ad for Look to Speak.

The minute-long commercial at the Oscars stands out from the start, with repeated dramatic close-ups of people’s eyes. It then concludes with a clip showing the app being used by a lady who is unable to talk, displaying how she directs her gaze to phrases on the screen to communicate.

Look to Speak was developed by Google Creative Lab and received a big update late last year to allow it to operate with languages other than English. It is compatible with phones running Android 9 and later, and you can get it from the Play Store.
