“Using JPEG recompression, legacy JPEG files can be converted losslessly to the more compact JPEG XL format: existing JPEG files can be transferred seamlessly. These can be restored into the same JPEG file to maintain backward compatibility with existing JPEG applications. Previous attempts to develop “next-generation” image formats, including JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, and now HEIC and AVIF, didn’t achieve this. A JPEG image must be decoded into pixels and then re-encoded with one of those other formats. This irreversible process results in generation losses.“

JPEG XL will not only be quicker and have higher image quality, but the files will also be smaller and easier to deal with. This will be a file format that retains higher image quality than conventional JPEG while simultaneously reducing file size and allowing for quicker encode/decode.
As per Chrome Unboxed, One of the most significant advantages will be the inclusion of alpha transparency. The inability to remove backgrounds from photographs is a major limitation of the standard JPEG format. So, if you require a picture with any kind of transparency, you’re forced to utilize a bigger, less-compressed image format that isn’t ideal for usage in bulk on the web. This issue will be resolved by JPEG XL in the future.

JPEG XL files can also be animated.
