JPEG XL will now be more mainstream with plenty of user-friendly features

JPEG XL is a significantly more compact picture format with many more features than the ordinary JPEG. It is not merely a new substitute for the outdated JPEG. The list of things that JPEG XL files can do is enormous, but it is becoming more and more of a common file type.

List of features of JPEG XL revealed and analysed

Here are the detailed features of the new JPEG XL image format:

  • High fidelity to the source image (matches human perception)
  • Supports alpha transparency
  • High-speed encoding and decoding
  • High compression ratio (20:1 to 50:1)
  • Improved functionality and efficiency over traditional formats
  • Progressive decoding (by resolution and precision)
  • Lossless JPEG transcoding
  • Support for both photographic and synthetic imagery
  • Graceful quality degradation across an extensive range of bitrates
  • Perceptually optimized reference encoder
  • Support for wide gamut and HDR
  • Support for animated content
  • Efficient encoding and decoding without requiring specialized hardware

The officials from JPEG XL commented:

Using JPEG recompression, legacy JPEG files can be converted losslessly to the more compact JPEG XL format: existing JPEG files can be transferred seamlessly. These can be restored into the same JPEG file to maintain backward compatibility with existing JPEG applications. Previous attempts to develop “next-generation” image formats, including JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, and now HEIC and AVIF, didn’t achieve this. A JPEG image must be decoded into pixels and then re-encoded with one of those other formats. This irreversible process results in generation losses.

JPEG XL will not only be quicker and have higher image quality, but the files will also be smaller and easier to deal with. This will be a file format that retains higher image quality than conventional JPEG while simultaneously reducing file size and allowing for quicker encode/decode.

As per Chrome Unboxed, One of the most significant advantages will be the inclusion of alpha transparency. The inability to remove backgrounds from photographs is a major limitation of the standard JPEG format. So, if you require a picture with any kind of transparency, you’re forced to utilize a bigger, less-compressed image format that isn’t ideal for usage in bulk on the web. This issue will be resolved by JPEG XL in the future.

JPEG XL files can also be animated. The question is how it will operate and be supported, but if JPEG XL is universally adopted, we’ll be able to generate animations like GIFs in a considerably more cost-effective manner, allowing for smoother, better animations without consuming massive amounts of data traffic.
