Google Is Rolling Out An Update For Google Workspace; Google Doc

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Google Workspace introduces client-side encryption, beginning with Google Docs beta.
  • User collaborate on encrypted documents, ensuring data protection through user-owned encryption keys, with plans to extend to Google Sheets and Slides.
  • The rollout, from January 16 to Febuary 1, 2024, is accessible to Google Workspace.

Google has recently updated Google Workspace, which has new features, so let’s know every update of it with the release of Google Docs’ client-side encryption capability; users may now work together to edit encrypted documents, make comments, and designate action items.

The goal of this open beta feature is to achieve parity with unencrypted documents while guaranteeing that user data is protected by keys they own for encryption. In the future, the capability will also be available for Google Sheets and Slides in addition to Google Docs. Users can designate “viewer” or “editor” permissions when sharing encrypted files, but not “comment only” permission. Every document has an autosave feature that automatically saves comments.

When you restore to a prior version, the comments from that version are restored. Using the Help Center, end users may learn more about encrypted file sharing, and administrators can activate client-side encryption at the domain, OU, and group levels. Users of Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus can access the rollout, which started on January 16, 2024, for Rapid Release domains and is slated to end on February 1, 2024, for slated Release domains. It is available to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus customers.

How To Start

  •  Administrators can activate client-side encryption at the domain, organizational unit (OU), and group levels by navigating to the Admin console.
  • Select the “Security” option.
  • Choose “Access and Data Control.”
  • Click on “Client-side Encryption.”
  • For additional details on client-side encryption, please refer to our Help Center.

Schedule Of Rollout

  • Domains with Rapid Release: The gradual rollout will begin on January 16, 2024 (with a maximum of 15 days for feature visibility).
  • Release domains are scheduled for a gradual deployment starting on February 1, 2024, with feature visibility extending up to 15 days.
