At the CES 2023 event, the most influential tech event in the world, Google announced its Watch Unlock feature, which helps users seamlessly unlock their phone while wearing their Pixel Watch. The company has been working on this feature since January 2022, relying on Android 13’s Active Unlock API.
However the company already showed the Watch Unlock, but this latest unlock option has yet to be rolled out. Fortunately, now it is speculated that the Watch Unlock feature is ready to take the floor, with a video indicating how it will work.
According to a video post shared on “X” (Twitter) by @AssembleDebug, the new Watch Unlock feature on a Pixel is under More security settings. The video indicates how the part will work. Regarding this, Google stated that Watch Unlock provides convenient ways to unlock the user’s phone when their hands get wet, or their face is not recognized.
The noticeable point is that there is one condition: the users must wear their Wear OS smartwatch on their wrist and stay near the device; then only the feature will work.
When the users hit on a notification or swipe up on the lock screen, their smartphone will scan their fingerprints or face. By chance, if unrevealed, it will check for the user’s watch, and the Wear OS watch will vibrate with a notification which will confront the ongoing action.
Moreover, it is highly expected that Google will release Watch Unlock with Android 14 soon, in the next few weeks. The company might hold off on the feature until the Pixel 8, Pixel Watch 2 and Wear OS 4 take the floor in October.
