Google’s new Android app archive feature will free up device storage without uninstalling apps

Google recently informed third-party developers that Android is “working on a new feature that would enable app archiving.” The corporation did not set a launch date, but it did begin building the basis for developer support.

This article shares everything that readers must know regarding the latest Android app archive feature that Google is currently working on.

Android app archive feature will temporarily remove parts of an app to free up device storage without losing user data

App archiving is promoted as an alternative to deleting applications completely, claiming to assist users in “reclaiming 60% of app storage temporarily by eliminating portions of the app.” Archived programs will stay on the device and may be readily reactivated “to the most recent available compatible version while keeping the user data.” Google stated:

Developers can benefit from fewer uninstalls and substantially lower friction to pick back up with their favourite apps.

The latter is accomplished using Google’s new “archived APKs” format, which will be generated for apps produced with Android Gradle Plugin 7.3. It will “preserve user data until the program is restored” and is “quite small” in size. Developers should keep an eye out for the impending Bundletool 1.10 release. Google further stated:

While we will start creating archived APKs now, they won’t be functional until the archiving functionality is launched to consumers later in the year

Developers will be able to completely “opt-out of the generation of archived APKs,” while the format may be reviewed using the Generated APKs API or App Bundle Explorer in Play Console. According to Google, “other app stores can gain from it as well.”
