WhatsApp always rolls out several new updates within the platform for its users in order to experience new features and enhancements. In contrast, WhatsApp has officially started to roll out a stable version of the new Passkeys feature after testing it in the beta phase for a couple of months.
WhatsApp’s new Passkeys feature is initially available for Android users, which allows the user’s face, fingerprint, or PIN to log in to their WhatsApp account. Meanwhile, this security feature was rolled out for WhatsApp’s beta testers on Android back in September, and now the Passkeys feature is officially live for each user.
WhatsApp: Passkeys Feature
As announced on “X”, WhatsApp states that Android users can now easily log in to their accounts using the Passkeys. If so, then you will be able to log in to your WhatsApp account without any login methods by just using your face, fingerprint, or PIN. The Passkeys are significantly encrypted digital keys that are saved to your password manager, Google. As a result, you can use the passkeys in order to log in to your WhatsApp account on different devices.
As per WhatsApp, “Each key is exclusively tied to the app or website they were created for, so you can never accidentally sign in to a fraudulent app or website. Also, the servers only hold public keys, so hacking is very difficult”.
Although Passkeys are the new security feature, nevertheless users shouldn’t get confused with the already existing security feature on WhatsApp that allows you to use your face unlock, fingerprint, or PIN to unlock the app. Moreover, this feature comes in handy when setting up WhatsApp on a new device. WhatsApp is still offering password authentication so that users have the option to choose the traditional method in case they are not sure about using the passkeys.
WhatsApp has just begun rolling out the Passkeys feature so it might not be available immediately to every user. The process is gradual though, and will be live to everyone in the next coming weeks.
Here’s how to create a passkey on WhatsApp:
- On your WhatsApp, tap on your Profile icon.
- Then select the Accounts tab.
- Now tap on the Passkeys option.
- Hit the Create a Passkey button and then follow the on-screen instructions.
